Got a good start-up or idea? The UK is looking for you
Mon, 16th Jan 2017
FYI, this story is more than a year old

The UK's Department for International Trade (UKDIT) is looking for Australian and New Zealand companies to participate in the Startup Games.

By way of its Global Entrepreneur Programme, the UKDIT has cast its gaze over the other side of the world to find the best and brightest Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) early-stage companies to participate in The Startup Games.

You might be wondering, what the heck are The Startup Games? Well, similar to the style of ‘Shark Tank', participants are able to pitch their companies and ideas to top investors, while receiving valuable mentoring and advice – only without the Hollywood drama of the reality TV series.

Using a clever Startup Games App, participants will pitch for virtual seed capital and the company with the most virtual investment at the end of the event will be declared the winner. The winner will then receive a return business-class flight to the UK where they will dive head-first into the local startup ecosystem, meet key industry players and receive specialist advice and support on entering the UK market.

Among other influential speakers, participants will also be able to benefit from the insights of Eric Van der Kleij, serial entrepreneur, founder of Level 39 - Europe's largest FinTech hub – and tech adviser and dealmaker for the UK Government.

“The Startup Games provide a fantastic opportunity to gain exposure and learn from top Australasian mentors and investors, as well as discover more about growing your business in the UK, with advice from local and visiting experts,” says Nick McInnes, Director General, UKDIT ANZ.

“The UK offers a very friendly environment for Australian startups looking to grow their business internationally. Some of the reasons why startups should consider the UK include low tax rates, access to finance and world-class hubs and accelerators.

Founders and co-founders of early-stage Australian and New Zealand startup companies are encouraged to apply by submitting a video pitch and summary business plan via the event website.

Applications close Friday 3 February 2017, with the event taking place in Sydney on 28 February 2017.
